Safety

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Audi Q6 e-tron are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW iX doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Audi Q6 e-tron achieved a “Good” rating - the highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The BMW iX has not been tested.

Earlier warning of stopped traffic, traffic signals, dangerous road conditions, weather, or accidents, can keep driver's safer and prevent crashes. The Q6 e-tron has Car-to-X Services, a system that seamlessly communicates important warnings to the driver about impending danger, if they're available. The iX doesn’t offer a system that can receive automated systems from infrastructure or other vehicles.

Both the Q6 e-tron and the iX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Audi Q6 e-tron has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2026 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, a “Good” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test, and a “Good” score in the revised vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention test. The iX has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2026.

Consumer Reports

Tires and Wheels

For better traction and acceleration, the Q6 e-tron has larger standard rear tires than the iX (255/55R19 vs. 235/60R20). The Q6 e-tron’s optional rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the iX (285/45R20 vs. 275/40R22).

The Q6 e-tron’s standard 255/55R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the iX xDrive45/60’s standard 60 series tires.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the Q6 e-tron can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The iX doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling

The SQ6 e-tron Prestige handles at .91 G’s, while the iX xDrive60 pulls only .83 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The SQ6 e-tron Prestige executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.5 seconds quicker than the iX xDrive60 (24.7 seconds @ .8 average G’s vs. 26.2 seconds @ .71 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Q6 e-tron’s turning circle is 2.3 feet tighter than the iX’s (39.7 feet vs. 42 feet).

Chassis

The Audi Q6 e-tron may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 350 to 450 pounds less than the BMW iX.

The Q6 e-tron is 7.7 inches shorter than the iX, making the Q6 e-tron easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Cargo Capacity

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Q6 e-tron. The iX doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

The Q6 e-tron’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the iX’s (4400 vs. 3500 pounds).

Ergonomics

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Q6 e-tron to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The iX doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Q6 e-tron SQ6/Prestige has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The iX doesn’t offer headlight washers.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Q6 e-tron to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The iX doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Recommendations

Motor Trend performed a comparison test in its January 2026 issue and they ranked the Audi Q6 e-tron higher than the BMW iX xDrive45.

The Audi Q6 e-tron outsold the BMW iX by 39% during 2025.
